Heroes: Signar, Borgar, Malik, Machteld.
Year 642 MR (3rd quarter)
The Heroes travel to Machteld's motherland, a voyage by land and sea taking the best part of two months. When they land in Grevesmhul, they find a lawless land rules by corrupt officials and pirates. Still, they find a point of light in the local church of Ruornil, led by an order of militant rangers/priests.
Mingling with the local low-life, Malik soon discovers that the Duke has "sold" his niece (Machteld's firstborn daughter) to a pirate called Karsten the Whale, in exchange for military might and political power. The Heroes soon decide to confront the Duke (Machteld's uncle) about this decision. The meeting rapidly escalates in a "coup".
Machteld makes a deal with the Duke's captain of the guards, the pragmatic veteran Gunther Eggert. The Duke, now and old and frail man, is to be confined to his rooms, while the Heroes go to rescue Machteld's daughter, who is already somewhere in Grabentod with her soon-to-be husband. In the meanwhile, Machteld's mother (who had been confined in her tower till now) will act as regent, with the help of the priests of Ruornil, and the iron fist of Gunther to keep the populace in line.
