Civil war ignites in the realm, with Measene allying herself with several villains, including the awnshegh Ruobhe "the Manslayer", and Tannen fighting with the support of his heroic companions.

Maesene is forced to find refuge in the lands of the Manslayer, when another awnshegh rises to power. The Ogre terrorizes the countryside and builds a fearsome army, eventually conquering Tuornen.
When Tannen is killed by the Manslayer, his companions must leave Tuornen and travel north, looking for a new home. On their way to the Giantdowns they help those that are in need. They all meet an untimely end while assisting the priesthood of Sera in the city of Nolien. Their wives and kids survive them, together with Sir Cain Abysmal, the immortal dark knight.
